Splatterhouse (PS3 & X-box 360, Namco Bandai, 2010)

(^courtesy of gamereactor) (should work as well for the TurboGrafx-16 version) (covers controls for both PS3 & 360)

I'm not familiar with the 2010 game at all. The first 2 games play the same way, almost more of a single plane platformer/action game with melee action, where weapons are almost guaranteed to instant kill any non-boss enemy. The Famicom game is a platformer, and much more light hearted. Some adventure elements, like obtaining candy to increase maximum health. The 3rd game vindicates this thread. Still some adventure elements(a map, multiple paths, which leads to multiple story elements/endings), but the action is all beat 'em up, complete with multi-plane movement. You can effectively just abuse the spin kick to get through the game, but the transformation powerup is a lot of fun to mess with too.
