Arcade (1988) [Shadow Warriors is the worldwide release & parent rom, Ninja Gaiden is the North American title, and Ninja Ryukenden is obviously the Japanese title]
1-2 players

Yup, the original NG was an arcade beat 'em up. I have absolutely no idea where the idea for the NES trilogy(and later 6th+ generation series) came from. This game has one of the most interesting continue screens, as a buzzsaw continues to lower, and if the player doesn't continue the screen goes red as it reaches Ryu(I don't know who the 2 player orange ninja is), and he, uh, lets out an "oh." Some parts of the environment are destructible, as the players characters can send enemies crashing through them(or vise verse), often uncovering collectibles (which are just walked over to obtain). This is how the ninja can pick up swords(despite always having one of their backs...).

I understand the 6th generation series more than the NES trilogy. you could say that former was an evolution of the original game, there's a game based on the antagonist that's a little closer to the classic format called NGZ Yaiba it isn't really that great, subpar at best.
