Arcade (1988):
1-2 players:

button 1 - kick
button 2 - jump
button 3 - punch
2, 1 - jump kick

One thing to note is that there is a specific sound, usually accompanied by an alternate punch/kick to signify when your character has defeated the enemy. Walk into items to pick them up. 1 will shoot a gun, 3 will use the butt of it as a melee weapon. 3 will throw a knife(1 will still kick while you're carrying it).

NES (1989):
1 player

B - punch/throw knife/strike with gun
A - kick/shoot gun
B & A - jump kick

Still a distinct sound when you defeat an enemy, but your attack never changes. You can enter open doors(upward) to fight for bonus objects(like brass knuckles to make your punches stronger). If you're defeated, you can only continue, from the main menu, at the beginning of the last stage you were on.
